I began oil painting in high school and attended Maryland Institute College of Art where I majored in Painting. I paint non-representational abstractions. The definition of “abstract” is to reach the essence of something. I add and edit marks to create an artwork, an object. I begin with underpaintings - quick, playful strokes with the paintbrush. I tend to use organic lines - curves, swirls, and swoops. I paint multiple canvases at the same time. I work on each one for a short amount of time, fifteen minutes to half an hour, to allow the paint to dry. In each layer of the painting, I respond to marks in previous layers by emphasizing, echoing, contrasting, or obliterating. The painting is finished when I feel each mark works to create a unified, balanced whole.
